Metro users in Dubai, there's a lot more rail coming your way. Think extensions out to Mirdif City Centre and International City, among others.

On the cards are extensions from Jebel Ali to the Expo site (near the new Al Maktoum International Airport) as well as a 3.5km extension that will bring the red line from Rashadiya Metro station out to Mirdif City Centre mall.

Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, CEO of the RTA's rail arm told Middle East Rail, “We did not finalise the alignment but we are tendering the project very soon so we can finish before Expo 2020. It will be around 10-15km, depending on the alignment.”

Al Ali added, “Another project we will complete before 2020 is the extension of the Green Line, which is 20.6km. It will extend to Al Jaddaf, with 11 stations serving areas such as International City, Academic City and Dubai Silicon Oasis."

A second phase, set to complete by 2020 for the Expo, will add seven more stations, linking the Burj Al Arab area and Mall of the Emirates

Add the new Al Sufouh Tramway to this, already testing, and there's lots more public transport to go around. Al Ali revealed that phase one is set to start in November 2014 and have 11 stations. It will be linked to Dubai Metro at some locations, including Dubai Marina station.
